alert. plus students at a bay area high school get something back thanks to a generous and anonymous donor. >> complete bay yeah news coverage starts right now. this is bay area news at 7:00. >> good evening. it's wednesday, october 3rd. i'm gasia mikaelian, and this is bay area news at 7:00. happening now president obama and republican presidential nominee mitt romney are squaring off in their first face to face debate. this is being held at the university of denver, and we're giving you a live look where president obama is currently speaking but both of the candidates have been responding to questions about domestic policy. one key topic here has been repairing the u.s. economy. each candidate seemed to disagree on how the government might help add jobs. the president seemed to call on more government initiatives while romney seeks less. the debate started about an hour ago and has 30 minutes less. we will have more in a live

report from denver for you in just 12 minutes. now to our continuing coverage of the oakland a's story. this afternoon the plot got even more improbable. on the final game of the regular season in front of a packed coliseum crowd, the a's quenched the american league west after never having once led the division all year. there was quite a celebration this afternoon. fred. >> absolutely, gasia. the second showering this week as a matter of fact. you know, june 30th, the oakland a's trailed texas by 13 games in the standing and since then they went on a 57 to 26 tear. this is the best record in major league baseball since june 30th and their mo is usually come back victories just like today. they trailed texas 5 to 1 in the fourth inning when the a's put ten batters up to the plate. they scored six runs on four

>> how far will the a's go? is the world series in reach? many of the fans say anything seems possible now. san francisco giants also learned their fate today. the giants will start at home in a best of five series against the cincinnati reds. game one is scheduled for saturday. game two is set for sunday but a start time is still to be determined. go to ktvu.com including a slide show a fan showing off their a's prize which you'll find right turned photos tab. this post season run could help the oakland a's in oakland. the management and coliseum authority are reporting a negotiated five-year league extension. the chronicle says an extension could include a $50 million fine if the team breaks the lease and leaves early for san jose or some other city. we have some developments tonight in the east bay where there is word of an officer-involved shooting. news chopper 2 flew over the caltrain yard in san jose just minutes ago. we are working to get

information, and what we've been told so far is that a san mateo county transit authority officer fired his weapon while the train was in san jose. we've also been told that one person was wounded and has been taken away. caltrain has stopped northbound service in the area not far from the station. new at 7:00, the search for the person or persons throwing objects at vehicles from an overpass above highway 4 in contra costa county. live in antioch tells us three vehicles have been hit here and one person was injured. >> investigators say even a small rock like this can do a lot of damage and all of the vehicles including an ambulance were hit here near the g street overpass. i tracked down the ambulance company and got photos of the damage. >> on monday about 9:00 p.m. an amr ambulance was heading east on highway 4 passing under the g3 overpass when an object came

crashing into the windshield shattering the fwlasz in front of the driveway. >> they didn't see anything out on the roadway, anybody in front of them. the way it was de scribed is they felt like the impact came from above from the overcrossing area. >> the emt and paramedic inside were not injured but it worried them and their manager. >> we're very concerned about the safety of the public who utilize that area. >> two other vehicles were hit by objects in the same spot last week. police say about 9:45 thursday night an object smashed through the windshield of a car hitting a 49-year-old brentwood man in the arm. police say the driver thought he'd been shot and drove to a hospital. later that night police say someone threw an object and shattered the windshield of a car driven by a 53-year-old woman from discovery bay. the chp say the drivers are lucky the objects didn't cause them to crash. >> it can cause vehicles to swerve out of control because they see the object coming. >> investigators are looking for witnesses and hope to catch whoever is doing this before someone ends up in an accident or fatally injured.

>> it's not a game. it's something we take very seriously and something we actively investigate. >> if you have any information you're asked to call antioch police or 911 and anyone spotted deliberately throwing objects at cars could face felony charges. ktvu channel 2 news. a federal judge declared a mistrial today in the cocaine fraud case against former san francisco police crime lab technician. 62-year-old deborah madden seen here in court is accused of taking cocaine from the police lab back in 2009. told reporters they could not reach a unanimous verdict. madden was accused of taking the cocaine by fraud or deception led to hundreds of cases being thrown out. a hearing is set next week to discuss a possible retrial. a new report out today by the federal monitor of the oakland police department criticized that opd has handled nine officer-involved shootings. it comes as a motion filed tomorrow to request a federal take over of the department. monitors report the use of force in some of the officer-involved

shootings. a physical rights attorney who is cowriting the motion says the department has to change. >> i've done police shootings in many cities, but the problems with oakland are systemic and unique. >> a hearing is set for december. the city is expected to fight the request. opd's active members of the community help fight crime. it's called mick field and it allows people to send tips through a text message. the oakland police web site has the number to text your tips. hot weather and fire danger prompted authorities to close san jose's park for the second day in a row. rangers first close it had park yesterday when the temperatures there hit 99 degrees. as for tomorrow the park will reopen with restrictions, no fires, no barbecues and should be some relief on the way. at 7:23 our meteorologist bill martin will lay out the timeline and how much cooler it might get. five people escaped unharmed this afternoon after a san jose

home caught fire. firefighters cut out the blaze in about an hour. they say the fire started in a backyard shed and spread to the home there on lee avenue. everyone inside the house made it out safely. fire crews are investigating the cause. hewlett-packard ceo telling investors and analysts the hard times will last at least another year. palo alto has been struggling now for several years. it will take time to recover because the global economy is weak. technology analysts say that whitman is setting the bar low why would turn around hp. >> said we don't have a problem inventing good stuff. we've had a problem getting that stuff out to the market for people to buy it. >> as for hp's future, whitman says the company will spend money on research and development and perhaps design a new smart phone. investigators did not react to whitman's closing at $14.91.

is the best match for you. you'll find the quiz right under our photo. pharmaceuticals has stopped shipping its generic after fda showed it doesn't work properly. food and drug administrations asked to pull xl 300 after chemical testing showed the drug released its key ingredient. the drug is a generic for well bu trin, which is made by glaks smith clien. hundreds of people complained the drug did not work or cause side effects, which is headaches, anxiety and insomnia. government investigators are warning that dozens of dietary supplements are illegal labeled. the report released by the department of health and human sources cited one in every five weight loss couldn't back up the scientific statements made on the labels. some products even claim they could cure or prevent diabetes. in response to the report the fda said it would consider

asking congress for more oversight powers to review the companies. the federal government is warning people about a scam that's targeting microsoft users. the federal trade commission today de tailed the scam. he said people pretending to be from microsoft are calling people saying your computer has a virus. they then offer a bogus fix for $450. the fpc the scams are based out of india. in the u.s. one that lets users pay to promote just like advertisers do. facebook tested the service in knew sooe land and has launched it in more than 20 other countries. increase the likelihood friends will see it. it will cost $7. a high school library shut due to budget cut social security getting ready to open. the small thing the anonymous donor has asked for in return. >> for the james logan high

school, something has been missing. this, the school library. since the start of school, the library has been shut down because of budget cuts. the long-time librarian was reassigned to teach english. the stacks of books and reference material has been collecting dust but not for much longer, not since the principal got a phone call from someone she never met who heard of the school's plight and offered to donate $60,000 to pay the librarian's salary. >> he was very insistent on remaining anonymous. >> the offer has sent a wave of emotion over the school. >> i'm so moved what it says about how people feel about libraries. >> students say they miss not having a library especially if it's a large one. >> it's a place i can do my home work instead of having to go home and do it. >> the school says the library will now be able to stay open at least until june. after that it's hard to say. >> because public education

practice runs above the city. we have our chief meteorologist bill martin here, and you actually saw that. >> i did see it. it's huge. so today as it cooled down a lot and you see the fog coming in about noon. the fog is moving into the bay right now. as you know it's 20 degrees cooler in some of the big cool down spots. right now in san francisco it's 65 degrees. that's actually at the airport. it's 69 in san jose, and you'll sleep a lot better temperatures getting to go away, the hot temperatures going away. these are the highs from today, and they are still very warm or hot. livermore antioch 93 in fairfield. san francisco 74 degrees, but boy by 12:30 the winds shift and had temperatures in san francisco plum etted. last night we had temperatures in the upper 70s in downtown san francisco. the overnight lows look kind of chilly. 49 in santa rosa. 50 in napa. when you go to school in hayward 56 tomorrow morning. kind of chilly as the kids head

off to school. the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting a lot longer. 28 degrees cooler. that's where the fog came from. it came up from the south sort of southerly surge and that's why temperatures in the next couple of days are going to be trending down. 80s, 90s, 100s. we'll get you some low 80s in some hot spots but this low pressure center is the culprit. we're going to be living in this range the next couple of days except the coast we'll be living in the 50s because the fog is going to be a constant player. the forecast model lines up the fog tomorrow morning right there. more than that. i think little misty again be more fog along the beach then by the afternoon temperatures that's the high so those are 70s, those going all the way up so that cool moist air infiltrated the delta or will infiltrate the delta. temperatures in sacramento 70s. 83 in brentwood, 82 in livermore
